INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope and policy

FOCUS AND SCOPE

Arquitecturas del Sur, one of the journals of the Department of Architectural Design and Theory at Faculty of Architecture, Construction and Design at University of the Bío-Bío (E-ISSN 0719-6466, Online; ISSN 0716-2677, Print), is published biannually in the months of January and July of each year. It is a serial, open-access publication that uses double-blind peer review. Since its first issue in 1983, its content has included original and unpublished research results that expand and strengthen knowledge of Latin American architecture and its related disciplines.

According to the UNESCO thesaurus, Arquitecturas del Sur´s topics include architecture, design, monuments, heritage preservation and urban planning. The journal accepts submissions of scientific articles, unpublished research results, master´s and/or doctoral theses, and conference papers. It also receives current thematic reviews that contribute new knowledge about concepts currently in development, provided that they are within the journal´s general focus; occasionally it publishes monographic issues resulting from specific calls for papers that in those cases are announced via the online platform. The submission of manuscripts presupposes that authors have knowledge of and comply with the conditions set forth in the calls for papers, as well as with the rest of the guidelines described in the journal´s Editorial Policies. Submitted texts may be written in Spanish, Portuguese and/or English, be original and unpublished, and mustn´t simultaneously have been submitted to any other type of publication or editorial body.

Arquitecturas del Sur is indexed in: ARLA, Avery Index, Dialnet, DOAJ, Ebsco, ERIHPLUS, Clarivate Analytics´ Emerging Sources Citation Index, Journal TOCs, Latindex, Open Archives Initiative, Qualis/Capes B2, Rebiun, and REDIB.

Arquitecturas del Sur adheres to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

EDITORIAL POLITICS

Arquitecturas del Sur adheres to the PKP (Public Knowledge Project) and is thus based on the principle of knowledge as a common good. Therefore, it gives open, free and immediate access to its content and provides the results of public research to the global community.

Arquitecturas del Sur is committed to complying with and respecting the rules of ethical behavior in all stages of the scientific publication process.

1. Publication in Arquitecturas del Sur

Original, unpublished texts may be submitted in Spanish, Portuguese or English, and occasionally articles will be selected for translation and publication in English. Manuscripts may only be submitted via the online platform and according to the format in the Guidelines for Authors. Articles should have an IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion), in addition to presenting conclusions and bibliographic references as specified by the Guidelines for Authors. Lack of compliance with these norms implies two possible editorial decisions: exclusion of the article from the editorial process, or the retraction of the article if it has already been published.

Additionally, Arquitecturas del Sur continuously receives manuscripts via its online platform that may be published in one of the issues currently in process.

Articles will only be received via the online platform. Submission of a manuscript for publication in Arquitecturas del Sur assumes that:

  • The article is original and unpublished, and is the result of research.
  • The article has not been published previously. Neither is it a fragmented, duplicated or redundant publication, nor has it been submitted simultaneously to another journal or other editorial body (or an explanation has been provided in the Comments to the Editor section).
  • The article and annexed material comply with ethical principles and current copyright laws, along with the stylistic and bibliographic requirements summarized in the Guidelines for Authors, which are available in About the Journal.
  • The article omits all references to the identity of the authors in the text; author names, affiliations and respective ORCID iDs must only be given on the journal´s online platform and in the Certificate of Authorship.
  • The article follows an IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion) plus conclusions, and its graphic material (figures and/or tables) is provided in separate files.
  • The article meets the requirements established in the Citations and Bibliographic References section of the Guidelines for Authors by following APA standards.
  • The article does not present a professional or personal, past or present conflict of interest. If one does exist, the possible relationships that may bias the research must be expressly indicated and should also be clarified in the submitted article.
  • All the graphic material is appropriately numbered, titled and/or captioned and sources are indicated, whether it comes from open format files, was created by the authors, or the authors of this article have permission from the original authors of the graphic material to use the table/figure.
  • The authors accept that receipt of the article by the publisher does not mean that it will be published.

2. Editorial review process in Arquitecturas del Sur

Submitted articles must omit all references to the identity of the authors as well as their possible sources of funding. Arquitecturas del Sur guarantees that all evaluations will be objective and articles will be treated confidentially.

Once the article has been submitted via the Arquitecturas del Sur platform, there are two review stages: editorial and double-blind peer review. The first is a preliminary evaluation by the Editorial Team that checks for: compliance with the Guidelines for Authors, the article´s relevance to the journal's focus, and a solid foundation of scientific quality and rigor. Once the article´s suitability has been established, it will be subject to double-blind peer review. The panel of experts is comprised of national and international researchers, 80% of whom are external to University of the Bío-Bío. To ensure the objectivity of the evaluations, reviewers must not present any type of conflict of interest with respect to the research, the authors and/or the funder of the research presented in the submission. The evaluators will conduct the review according to the Arquitecturas del Sur Article Evaluation Form (download form) and will recommend one of the following:

PUBLISHABLE (which may include suggestions with optional changes from the reviewers and/or mandatory changes from the editor).

PUBLISHABLE WITH MODIFICATIONS (mandatory changes from the reviewers and editor)

NOT PUBLISHABLE (rejected)

If the reviewers differ in their recommendations, the article will be sent to a third evaluator.

If the peer review process evaluates the article as PUBLISHABLE WITH MODIFICATIONS, the Editorial Team may deem a second round of evaluation necessary. In the case that minor revisions are requested, a second round of assessment is not necessary, and the Editorial Team will verify that the required suggestions have been made. In both cases, the Editorial Team will set a deadline for the corrections and if after the second round the reviewers once again request major revisions, the article will be rejected.

The final decision on the publication of an article is the exclusive responsibility of the Arquitecturas del Sur Editorial Team, is not subject to appeal, and will be communicated to authors through the online platform.

3. Open Access Policy.

Arquitecturas del Sur publishes the post-print version of articles in its open-access institutional repository.

Arquitecturas del Sur authorizes authors to disseminate a copy of the published text through their personal webpages or any open-access repository, together with a mandatory full citation of the text, including: the year, full title, name of Arquitecturas del Sur, issue, and page numbers on which the article was published, and the DOI and/or link to the article on the Arquitecturas del Sur website.

4. Archiving

Arquitecturas del Sur uses the LOCKSS program, an archiving system distributed among participating libraries that permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for conservation and restoration purposes. Plus...

The journal includes the bibliography cited in each article as an exportable field in Dublin Core format according to the OAI-PMH protocol.

The journal conducts plagiarism checks using the software Turnitin, which may result in the rejection of the article or may halt its progress through the editorial process.

5. Copyright and licenses.

The content of the articles published in each issue of Arquitecturas del Sur is the sole responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the opinion of University of the Bío-Bío. The authors will maintain their copyright; however, they will guarantee the journal the right to first publication and dissemination of their work. The publication of the article in Arquitecturas del Sur will be subject to the Creative Commons Attribution- International license (CC BY-SA) that allows others to share-copy, transform or create new material from this work for commercial purposes, as long as they recognize the authorship and first publication in this journal by citing them correctly, and their new contributions are under a license with the same terms. The authors are free to promote, disseminate and publish the Arquitecturas del Sur PDF version of their works in institutional repositories.

4. TABLES

Tables include additional information that when necessary broadens the content of the text with data or statistics. If used, tables must be cited in the text and should be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals. They should be included in the article near where they are referenced, as in the following example:

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat (Table 1). Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur."

Tables should be listed according to their numbering, including a brief description and the source of the information. For example:

Table 3: Chronological evaluation of temperature increase in adobe walls. Source authors

Table 4: Increase in humidity in winter months in adobe walls. Source authors.

Each table should be attached individually as a separate file, which should be named according to the table and number, i.e. (Table 1).

All illustrations (such as images, maps and/or photographs) will be referred to as "Figures", and should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in their corresponding place in the text, as in the following example:

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat (Figure 2). Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur.”

5.1. Figure requirements

    • In a file separate from the text, include the caption of each figure in the article. The file, in MS Word format, should be named “Figures”, be written in Calibri size 11 font, with 1.15 line spacing, and in the case of multiple-line captions there should be a hanging indent after the first line.
    • Each figure should be attached as a separate file and named according to the figure and number, i.e. (Figure 1).
    • Figures should be sent in separate files in JPG or TIFF format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, and a minimum length of 20 cm on the smaller side.
