INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope and policy

Cultura-Hombre-Sociedad journal is edited by the Facultad de Ciencias Socialed of the Universidad Católica de Temuco. It publishes original articles in Spanish, English, French, Mapudungun and Portuguese in different fields on social science and humanities, with special emphasis on contemporary issues and historic processes of societies with sociocultural diversity and tension derived from inequalities and colonial heritages. CUHSO is a six-monthly journal aimed for specialist on social sciences and humanities, ungraduated and postgraduate students and researchers of related disciplines.

Peer review process

The journal has established an objective regime for evaluating works. The manuscripts are first reviewed by the CUHSO editorial team and if they meet the standards, they undergo an evaluation process by external peers through a double blind system, these reviewers then issue an evaluation report, choosing one of three options:

  • Approved
  • Approved subject to modifications
  • Rejected

In case of disparity, a third reviewer is used to decide on the publication of the manuscript.

The evaluation process should not take more than three months.

The author will be advised when the decision has been made.

Authors whose articles have been approved for publication will have a maximum of 5 working days to make the corrections relating to content, form and style.

As part of the Forum of Scientific Editors of Chile, CUHSO adheres to the rules of good practice for peer review of the Association of American University Presses.

Types of manuscripts received

Assays and theoretical reviews

Theoretical manuscripts and original assays about specific issues of social sciences and humanities. Manuscript must include an introduction, body of text and conclusion. Also, it must include the title, abstract and three key words in native language and English. When Spanish is not the native language, then a Spanish title, abstract and key words must be provided. Manuscripts will be subject of a peer review process and should have between 8,000 and 12,000 words. Name and project code, funding resources and year must be specified in a footnote.

Research Manuscripts

Original manuscripts presenting results of a research. Manuscript must include an introduction, body of text and conclusion. Also, it must include the title, abstract and three key words in native language and English. When Spanish is not the native language, then a Spanish title, abstract and key words must be provided. Manuscripts will be subject of a peer review process and should have between 8,000 and 12,000 words. Name and project code, funding resources and year must be specified in a footnote.

Research Progress

Original manuscripts that present the progress of an ongoing research. Manuscript must include an introduction, body of text and conclusion. Also, it must include the title, abstract and three key words in native language and English. When Spanish is not the native language, then a Spanish title, abstract and key words must be provided. Manuscripts will be subject of a peer review process and should have between 4,000 and 8,000 words. Name and project code, funding resources and year must be specified in a footnote.

Documents and testimonies

Documents and testimonies that have values as empiric or theoretical material for social sciences and humanities, particularly at regional level. Submission is free-format. These contributions will be submitted to the Editorial Committee that will decide on their publication.

Books reviews

Books reviews on recent publications relevant for social sciences and humanities. These contributions will be submitted to the Editorial Committee that will decide on their publication. They should have between 1,000 and 2,000 words. This type of manuscript is free-format.

EDITORIAL POLICIES

Manuscripts submitted to CUHSO should be originals and authors are committed to not submit them to other journals at the same time.

Manuscripts in Spanish, English, French, Mapudungun and Portuguese of researchers from all over the world are accepted.

CUHSO journal does not no apply charges to authors for processing or submission of manuscript.

Manuscript submission

Manuscripts will be submitted to CUHSO trough its web page (www.cuhso.cl) following the indications specified for author register.

Manuscripts should be submitted in a Word compatible format.

Authors are responsible of submitting graphic elements of major quality when correspond. Exact position of illustrations should be indicated and attached in jpg or tiff format, with a minimal resolution of 300 dpi.

Manuscripts should be submitted in Times New Roman letter, 12 letter size, double spaced.

All manuscripts must include a cover page with the manuscript title. Manuscripts for peer review should be submitted in anonym version, although in the approved or approved with modifications version it should state name of author/s, email addresses, affiliation and include a short biography.

Manuscripts submitted should not contain any reference to author/s. Digital sign on document must be erased, as well as any auto-cite such as “as this author discussed”, “as I stated in other moment”, etc. Author/s can cite to themselves in third person.

In the following page must include an abstract that not exceed 300 words and 4 key words. Title, abstract and key words must be submitted in the native language and in English (an English version must be included when manuscript is approved or approved with modifications).

Citation and references

CUHSO’s citation and reference system is inspired by the APA standards and is adapted to the rules and standards of Spanish. The following are some examples of a citation within the text.

Work of a single author: «Pérez (2000)», «as Pérez points out (2000)», «in 2000 Pérez noted».

Different works by the same author from the same year should be differentiated with letters, arranged alphabetically, after the date: Ramírez (2009a), Ramírez (2009b).

If a work has two authors, both should be named and then the above citation rules should be followed.

When there are six or more authors, the last name of the first author should be stated, followed by the addition of «et al».

When citing an organisation, use the full name and then add the abbreviation in parenthesis; in the following quotes, only the abbreviation should be used.

In text quotations of less than 40 words should be placed within the same paragraph in quotation marks. Quotations of more than 40 words should be started within a separate paragraph, with an indent of (1.5cm).

In text quotations should always indicate the surname, year of publication and page number: (Pérez, 2010, p. 68).

In the even that a work has a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), it should be included in the list of references. When the digital link of the work is available, it should be incorporated. The following are some examples of how documents should appear in the list of references:

Sending of manuscripts

Check list for preparation of a submission

Manuscripts will be submitted to CUHSO through its webpage (www.cuhso.cl) following the register indications pointed out in the web.

As part of the submission process, author/s are required to check the submission complies with all issues described below. Submissions that do not follow the instructions will be returned.

1. Manuscript has not been previously published and has not been submitted to any other journal.

2. File submitted is compatible with Word format.

3. References have web links and DOI whenever it is possible.

4. When graphics and tables are included, they follow the indications on Standards for author/s. Their position within manuscript is correctly indicated.

5. Text complies with cites and references and style requirements on Standards for author/s.

6. If it is a submission for peer review, ensure that regarding instructions on Standards for author/s has been followed.

7. Authors state that their manuscripts comply with the principles of Singapore Statements on Research Integrity.

8. The manuscript has a version of title, abstract and key words in its native language and in English.

9. Name or code of the project, funding sources and year from which the article is resultant are indicated.
