Martha Nussbaum lays out educational, social and ethical requirements essential for evaluating development. This assessment, that seeks to rectify a narrowly economical approach, matches several aspects of the idea of development found in the Pontifical Social Magisterium. This paper analyzes three doctrinal similarities common to both viewpoints, while also acknowledging the differentiating nuances, when attempting to establish what means development: the affective education, the promotion of human abilities and the preferential concern for poverty.
