Neonatal polycythaemia: a review of 451 cases Objective: To describe the characteristics of neonatal polycythaemia in babies born at the San Jose Hospital, Santiago. Methods: A descriptive and retrospective study carried out between January 2000 and December 2001. Results: 451 cases were detected. Maternal factors such as toxaemia, intrauterine growth retardation and gestional diabetes were present in 13.96%, 6.65% and 6.43% respectively. 43% of babies were small for dates and 22.8% large for dates. Down syndrome was present in 5 cases. 29.5% were asymptomatic, 64.2% with metabolic signs, 20.1% with CNS signs and plethora in 6.9%. Conclusions: Neonatal polycythaemia especially affects term babies, small and large for dates and who suffered intrauterine hypoxia.
