Toxocara worms belong to the Ascaridae family, the most important of which are T. canis and T. cati which cause visceral migrant larvae (VML) disease. Toxocara larvae were first identified by Beaver in 1952 in a liver biopsy performed on a two-year-old child who had hepatomegaly and eosinophilia. VML disease occurs most often in children 1 to 5 years old, with a history of ingestion of earth contaminated with cat and dog faeces. Clinical findings include eosinophilia, hepatomegaly, transitory pneumonia and hypergammaglobulinemia. Soil samples were taken from parks in Asunción, close to children playgrounds. Of a total of 98 registered parks in the city, samples were taken from 51. Two samples of sand, 30 by 30 centimeters and 0,5 centimeters in depth every 15 m2 were taken. The samples were placed in a container with water and they were shaken vigorously in order to prepare an emulsion which was then filtered and studied with the 33% copper sulphate method. Of the 51 samples analysed, 27 (53%) were found to be contaminated with Toxocara eggs. Amongst the contaminated samples were the most two most crowded parks of Caballero and Ñu Guazú. The high prevalence of Toxocara eggs found in the soil of parks and plazas were children play indicate an elevated health risk to the people
