C A SOUZA, PAULO; ELISEI, CARINA; O SOARES, CLEBER  e  L MASSARD, CARLOS. CRYOPRESERVATION OF Plasmodium (Novyella) juxtanucleare WITH GLYCEROL. Parasitol. día [online]. 2000, vol.24, n.1-2, pp.22-26. ISSN 0716-0720.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0716-07202000000100003.

The cryopreservation of Plasmodium juxtanucleare by glycerol at four concentration (20%, 16%, 12% and 8%) was evaluated. Three fowls, per glycerol concentration (GC), were inoculated with warmed blood after storage at -196°C for six month. Daily blood smear for 35 days were done. The biological parameter showed that the parasitaemia was directly proportional to GC, the prepatent period was of 12.4 ± 2.7 days, the maximum peak of parasitaemia (MPP) was of 23.5 ± 3.5 days and, the average duration of parasitaemia was of 33.6 ± 1.0 days. The rate of hemolysis varied of 12.45% to 40% and, was inversely proportional to GC. There was significant difference (P < 0.05) regarding to MPP, which the inoculum with 12% concentration differed of the others concentration, showing the highest MPP (30.5 ± 0.5). The parasitaemia, average of the groups, began between the seventh and eighth day post-inoculation (DPI) and, lasted to 35o DPI. The group that received inoculum with 20% glycerol had the highest and farthest parasitaemia. The 20% glycerol was the more efficient concentration to cryopreservation of P. juxtanucleare
