Abstract

GONZALEZ D., RICARDO; CORIA DE LA H., PAULINA  and  MARTINEZ T., M. AGÉLICA. Ureaplasma urealyticum COLONIZATION IN PRETERM NEWBORN INFANTS AND THEIR MOTHERS. Rev. chil. infectol. [online]. 2001, vol.18, n.4, pp.250-254. ISSN 0716-1018.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0716-10182001000400002.

A prospective study was performed to determine the incidence de Ureaplasma urealyticum in 45 mothers who delivered preterm newborn infants with very low birth weight, less than 1.500 grs, born in Hospital Del Salvador since October 1996 to August 1997. The samples were obtained from maternal vaginal fluid and from gastric, conjunctival and endotracheal secretions of newborn infants. U. urealyticum was isolated from 21/45 (46.6%) mothers. Of the colonized mothers, 7/21 (33.3%) newborn infants had positive membranes, an important risk factor in the vertical transmission of U. urealyticum from mothers to preterm newborn infants

Keywords : Ureaplasma urealyticum; Preterm newborn; Premature rupture of fetal membranes.
