MARINOVIC, Mimí. La ansiedad escénica en intérpretes musicales chilenos. Rev. music. chil. [online]. 2006, vol.60, n.205, pp.5-25. ISSN 0716-2790.

Performance anxiety (PA) is one of the major problems that musicians face in their careers. Surveys carried out in developed countries show prevalence figures ranging 24% -70% and quote severe cases leading to abandonment of the profession. Objectives: detect the prevalence of PA in Chilean musicians working in the main groups of concert music and determine some of the factors that, according to their view, contribute to its appearance. Method: 249 musical performers (122 players, 26 directors, and 101 singers) completed a self-administered questionnaire, included in a wider research on performing artists. This instrument was complemented with 36 open interviews (13 players, 6 directors, and 11 singers). Results: 78% of the musicians reported having suffered PA, more commonly women. Sixty-four percent considered that the development of PA was mainly related to the performing mastery (inadequate preparation, difficult work), whereas 32% attributed it to personal factors (being nervous, fear of failure), and only 4% to situational factors. There were significant differences by gender, speciality, and age. The interviews allowed further in-depth considerations about these results. Conclusions: a high prevalence of PA was detected, finding which should be approached interdisciplinary by mental health professionals and music specialists, for the benefit of the general education, specialized training, and career development of musical performing artists
