Fernando García, recipient of the National Arts Prize in Music 2002, presents his recollections of the close ties that he and his friend León Schidlowsky had with composers and Chilean musicians, poets, stage artists as well as visual artists who were active in Chile during the decade of the fifties. An emphasis is placed on the creative and innovative attitude that León Schidlowsky showed since his earliest works, his concern over social injustices in Chile and America and the importance of poetry and visual arts as stimulus for his music. To conclude, an analysis is made of the development reached during the twentieth century by the Chilean music institutions within the historical context of the country. This served as support for León Schidlowsky, Fernando García and many other composers in terms of carrying out studies in composition and creating music in Chile. This lasted until the decay of these institutions as a result of the 1973 military coup, and the subsequent impossibility of recovering their former importance even twenty years after the end of the dictatorial regime.
