PITA PICO, Roger. The legislation on the freedom of imprint in Colombia in the period of Independence and in the born Republic: convergences, debates and fluctuations. Rev. estud. hist.-juríd. [online]. 2019, n.41, pp.341-366. ISSN 0716-5455.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0716-54552019000100341.

Within the framework of the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Independence of the Hispano-American nations, the purpose of this article is to analyze the changes and permanence in the development of the legislation regarding the freedom of the press in Colombia during the period of Independence and the nascent Republic. This normative framework was preceded by an intense debate immersed in a complex set of forces between two tendencies: the conservative position inherited from the old regime that favored previous censorship and closer monitoring and, on the other hand, a liberal current that went further in line with the budding Republican project and that advocated greater freedom of expression. The advances of the freedom of the press was developed within a context of gradual secularization and the State’s quest to expand its power, which was reflected in the tensions registered between civil and ecclesiastical jurisdiction when implementing controls. Even with all the difficulties, these first efforts for a free expression were key to the process of forming a Republic based on the democratic principles of freedom and equality.
