Resumen

ALVARADO BORGONO, Miguel. La pulsión por la identidad: Nicolás Palacios, maldito y moderno. Lit. lingüíst. [online]. 2005, n.16, pp.15-30. ISSN 0716-5811.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0716-58112005000100002.

This article analyzes a book of the Chilean doctor Nicolás Palacios who publishes an opulent book titled Chilean race in the last decade of the 19th century. Palacios write from certain conditions and assumptions that today are inconceivable. This author personifies for us in the first place the ambition to think the totality from a racist perspective that today is unacceptable. Despite although we did not subscribe any of its theses, we cannot deny that the book contains a hypothesis without empty turns or voids. He offers us a totalizing hypothesis, poetic and rhetorically solid, caught by him from all the forms of science, history, biology, sociology, anthropology and linguistics which was present in Chile at the end of the19th century

Palabras clave : racism; modernity; chilean identity.
