Abstract

VON WERDER, Sophie Dorothee. FICTION OR HYPERREALITY?: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF "TLÖN, UQBAR, ORBIS TERTIUS״ BY JORGE LUIS BORGES AND "DER AUSWEG״ BY DANIEL KEHLMANN. Lit. lingüíst. [online]. 2013, n.28, pp.107-121. ISSN 0716-5811.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0716-58112013000200007.

The author conducted a comparative study of "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" and "La salida" based on Jean Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality and simulation. Baudrillard observes that in postmodern cultures, reality is invaded and replaced by simulation. It is impossible to distinguish between them, reality ceases and gives way to hyperreality. The stories are analyzed to determine whether reality and simulation can be understood as opposing principles, or whether different levels of simulation are created, causing reality to vanish. The study reflects on the role of the media in each of the stories (books in the case of Borges; books, movies, internet, mobile phone in the case of Kehlmann) and their relation to the hyperreality created.

Keywords : hyperreality; simulation; idealism; technology; media; identity.
