Abstract

In Chile Trichomycterus areolatus distributes from Limarí (30° 42' S) to Puerto Varas (41° 19' S). Nowadays, populations that living in points of extreme distribution have not any genetic flux. This is mainly due to current physical isolation of hydrographic basins. The isolated reproduction, together with different hydrological characteristics of northern rivers compared to the southern ones, would have induced a speciation process between more distant populations. To assess the degree of populations similarity from north and southern rivers, extreme distribution samples were compared, using geometric morphology, 20 specimens from Biobío river and 20 specimens from Choapa river were analyzed. Significative differences were found in relation to their morphology (Goodall´s F Test F= 4,1936; p< 0,0001). These shape changes are probably related to differences in habitat and the long reproductive isolation time among the populations. This may indicate a kind of speciation or local adaptation of the specie. Still remains to analyze possible genetic variations may have this populations.
