MURILLO, Carlos  y  OYARZUN, Ciro. ONTOGENETIC VARIATION IN THE DIET OF PATAGONOTOTHEN LONGIPES (STEINDACHNER 1876) (PERCIFORMES: NOTOTHENIIDAE) IN THE FIORD  OF CASTRO, CHILOE. Gayana (Concepc.) [online]. 2002, vol.66, n.2, pp.219-224. ISSN 0717-652X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-65382002000200018.

Patagonotothen longipes is a coastal nototenid geographically distributed in Chile, from Chiloé (42º29'S, 73º45'W) to the South. In the present work their trophic ecology is analyzed, based on 105 individuals captured in the Fiord of Castro (Chiloé Island). For each specimen total length (LT in cm) and weight (g) were recorded. The information of the stomach contents was analysed by the numerical, gravimetric and the frequency methods; also the dietary coefficient of Hureau (Q) and the index of relative importance (IIR) were estimated. The trophic diversity was analysed by means of the heterogeneity index of Shannon-Wiener (H') and Pielou' s (J') eveness. The diet similarity between the different size classes was estimated by the index of percentual similarity (ISP) and cluster analysis for groupings. The trophic spectrum is composed by 12 animals taxa, an alga (Porphyra columbina) and pellet. The relative importance (IIR) of the main items are: Euphausiacea (64,4%), Ostracoda (9,4%), Pellet (8,2%), Hemigrapsus crenulatus (8%), Reptantia (3,2%), Amphipoda (2,9%) and the shrimp Nauticaris magellanica (1,6%). The coefficient Q, coincides with the IIR, indicating that Euphausiacea is the dominant prey (Q=508). Patagonotothen longipes presents a high trophic heterogeneity (H'=2,09) and eveness (J'= 0,79); with bentophagic behavior with a trend to be euriphagic and that would consume the prey in the same proportions, in terms of weight. Concerning the sizes, two trophic groups were discriminated: GT1 (12,5-18,5 cm) and GT2 (18,5 cm)
