Resumen

GARCIA M., Camila  y  CHONG, Javier. THE DIET OF BRAMA AUSTRALIS VALENCIENNES 1837 OFF THE  CENTRAL-SOUTHERN AREA OF CHILE (VIII REGION) IN AUTUMN 2000 AND SUMMER 2001. Gayana (Concepc.) [online]. 2002, vol.66, n.2, pp.225-230. ISSN 0717-652X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-65382002000200019.

The diet of 216 specimens of Brama australis ("reineta") collected from the artisanal fishing in the Arauco Gulf, Chile, was studied during autumn 2000 and summer 2001. The gastric content of B. australis was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by size, sex and season. The pomfret showed a narrow trophic spectrum in the study area, preferently of crustaceans (Euphausiids), while fish and squids were secondary or occasional preys. The high demand of Euphausia sp. would be due mainly to the fact that B. australis would select small size preys whose alimentary preference would be associated to the study period and the environmental offer

Palabras clave : Feeding; trophic ecology; pomfret; Brama; Chile.
