ABSTRACT. Within the existing information from national institutions and landing samplings, artisanal fisheries, as well as biological characteristics of the of Brazilian codling (Urophycis brasiliensis) were analyzed. Artisanal fisheries are a prevalent activity in Uruguay, with important socio-economical incidence in Piriápolis and La Paloma during the summer because of touristic requirements. Total captures were from 343 and 363 ton (1990-1999). During this period other artisanal fisheries population were established. The longline is the most commonly used fishing art in artisanal fisheries. Population captured had lengths from 23 to 64 cm. Bigger lengths were predominant in La Paloma. Females were more abundant and bigger than males. Male-female proportion was significative different between coastal and deeper zones. The whole otholits did not allow age determination. Females have an allometric growth (P = 0.005114 * L3,1907) and recuperation stage maturity fish were found. Use of artisanal fishing art selects the commercial length and the artisanal explotation outside the repropuctive protect Brazilian codling life cycle. Increasing on fisheries yield probability is the main reason to get more information about biology species, estimation of biomass to be exploited and fishery socio-economical analysis
