This paper summarizes five years of Arica's archaeological pottery research. As a consequence, we have differentiated two locals ware traditions for the Middle Period, linked to the Tiwanaku impact over southern Peru and northern Chile's Western Valleys. The Altiplanic Tradition was technologically, stylistically, and contextually related to the Altiplanic State, and disappeared with it. On the other hand, the Western Valleys Tradition was a reaction from the original populations of the zone, against the altiplanic influence. This local tradition was popularized toward the end of the Middle Period and developed along the Late Intermediate Period as an expression the Arica Culture. This process enclosed the valley and coastal peoples
