This paper responds to a first stage of our research related to the first cultigens in the central region of Chile. For this purpose, we studied only archaic and early ceramic period sites, located at different ecosystems within the region. The archaeobotanical approach has been conclusive to obtain the positive results we offer as a basis of future research concerning this problem. The early AMS date (2,960±40 BP) obtained from charred quinoa-like Chenopodium, from the lower cultural deposits at Las Morrenas 1 site located at the high Andean mountains, could indicate the presence of this cultigen even since the final archaic period
