Resumen

SANCHEZ R., Rodrigo; PAVLOVIC B., Daniel; GONZALEZ C, Paola  y  TRONCOSO M, Andrés. CURSO SUPERIOR DEL RÍO ACONCAGUA: UN ÁREA DE INTERDIGITACIÓN CULTURAL PERÍODOS INTERMEDIO TARDÍO Y TARDÍO. Chungará (Arica) [online]. 2004, vol.36, suppl., pp.753-766. ISSN 0717-7356.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-73562004000400018.

In the following paper we shall present the advances achieved in the characterization of the Late Intermediate period, at the upper course of the Aconcagua river (Fondecyt Projects 1970531 and 1000172). We have been able to visualize that, during the Late Intermediate period and Late period, the Aconcagua culture does not present the typical characteristics of its' nuclear area, the Maipo-Mapocho basin. It has been also noticed that the area has its' own and distinctive cultural dynamic, that vaguely may be interrelated with the neighboring cultures (Diaguita culture of the Semi Arid North and Aconcagua culture of the Maipo-Mapocho basin). The persistence of types of material culture of each of the foreign culture present in the area, that are diagnostic of their original or nuclear zone, and the persistence of local cultural elements, has led us to think of the use of a type of intentional regulation of the different cultural identities that converge in the area. This has been conceptualized as cultural "interdigitation". The maintenance of the different cultures, which persist until the Inca period, opens the discussion about ethnical identities and their frontiers. This new insight, although provisional, invites us to reconsider the prehistory of Central Chile and its' relation with the Andean world

Palabras clave : Upper course of the Aconcagua river; Late Intermediate period; Late period; Aconcagua culture; Inca; cultural interdigitation.
