Resumen

GONZALEZ-SILVESTRE, Leticia et al. PALEOVEGETATION CONDITIONS AND HUMAN SETTLEMENTS DURING THE EARLY FORMATIVE: POLLEN ANALYSIS FROM THE TULÁN-85 SITE (1,530/1,260-460/420 CAL. YR. BC), IN THE SALAR DE ATACAMA BASIN. Chungará (Arica) [online]. 2013, vol.45, n.3, pp.387-410. ISSN 0717-7356.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-73562013000300003.

Pollen analysis from a stratigraphic column that represents the entire temporal occupation of the Early Formative Tulán-85 site is presented. The site is located at the southeast border of the Salar de Atacama, and dates to between 1,530-1,260 to 460-420 cal BC. By using a comparison with modern pollen we were able to differentiate three altitudinal vegetation levels. This comparison suggests there existed more humid conditions at the beginning of the Tilocar phase (1,530-1,260 cal. BC). In the middle of the sequence arid events were detected, showing an increasing aridity toward the upper end of the stratigraphic column. Results of the pollen analysis match paleoclimatic information from the high Puna suggesting the synchronicity between a more favorable humid phase with the establishment of pastoralist settlements located at lower elevations. It is also important to denote the identification of arid events at the end of the occupational sequence, which were not described before for this area.
