Resumen

MARSCHOFF, María; CASTINEIRA, Carola  y  SIMIOLI, Julia. REFERENCE ARCHAEOSTRATIGRAPHY FOR HUMAN OCCUPATION AT ESTECO I, ANTA DEPARTMENT, SALTA, ARGENTINA (16TH-17TH CENTURIES). Chungará (Arica) [online]. 2014, vol.46, n.3, pp.355-374. ISSN 0717-7356.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-73562014000300004.

In this article we present the initial results of geoarchaeological studies carried out at the archaeological location of Esteco I, located near the area today known as El Vencido in the Department of Anta in the Province of Salta, Argentina. A number of finds have been recorded in this area suggesting that this location corresponds to the historic city of Nuestra Señora de Talavera, which was founded in 1566 and, later, abandoned and relocated 100 km away from its original location in 1609. The landscape of the studied area is characterized by its mound-like geoforms of fluvio-eolic origin that preserve the archaeological record of the historical foundations of this city in the uppermost deposits of the stratigraphic sequence. Nevertheless, the dense vegetation of the "monte chaqueño" that covers the surface of the terrain makes the identification of the historic and archaeological evidence difficult. Our first systematic approaches, which included the implementation of a geoarchaeological analysis, allow us define a preliminary stratigraphic sequence as a reference for future research. Based on stratigraphic, sedimentological, microbiological, chronological, and artifactual analysis we propose an interpretation regarding the site formation processes and evaluate environmental and climatic changes during such processes.
