CASTRO RAMIREZ, Luis Carlos. SPIRITUAL CORDS, IDENTITY TIES: MISAS DE INVESTIGACIÓN IN ESPIRITISMO CRUZAO IN CALI (COLOMBIA). Chungará (Arica) [online]. 2017, vol.49, n.1, pp.133-142. Epub 20-Mar-2017. ISSN 0717-7356. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-73562017005000009.
This paper focuses on the Afro-Cuban religious practice of Espiritismo Cruzao in Cali (Colombia), and on the ceremonies called spiritual masses. Although there are different types of spiritual masses, this work will only discuss the misa de investigación (mass of inquiry). This is a ceremony performed by an espiritista (medium), and it aims to determine the spiritual cord of the person. The spiritual cord or spiritual cadre is the group of spirits that is believed to accompany a person from their birth. Accordingly, the argument emphasizes the relevance of the dead and of the spiritual world, as well as the influence of these on the everyday life of believers. In this respect, I suggest that the spiritual cord has an influence on the condition of being a person, and that the spirit's personalities reconfigure the personhood of the practitioners. Finally, since this paper arises from my fieldwork in Cali between 2012 and 2015, the phenomenon of these diasporic religious practices in the national context is analyzed through ethnographic and narrative work.
