Abstract
JIMENEZ L, Rafael. Caloric restriction, a way for prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes?. Rev. chil. nutr. [online]. 2012, vol.39, n.3, pp.88-93. ISSN 0717-7518. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-75182012000300013.
Caloric restriction is the only nutritional intervention that has shown solid benefits in health and longevity in experimental animals. On the positive side, those related to glucose homeos-tasis are striking and consistent. It seems that these benefits are associated with lower generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, with less lipid peroxidation of cell membrane and stimulation of macroautophagy. Well known patterns such as the Mediterranean diet, vegan and vegetarian diet, the diet of the older population of Okinawa and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet with a special attention to the unsaturated oils and strict respect for fasting between meals, might make an interesting line of construction of a dietary pattern aimed to prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.
