The objective of this review is to analyze the current regulations at national and local level in order to identify opportunities for school health promotion and nutrition education in basic schools, including policy proposals at national and local level focused in schools. A complete legislation and regulations review backing healthy food at schools is carried out. Three successful municipal norms and regulations are described in detail. Regulations that support healthy food in schools are analyzed with a critical view of the present situation. Different guidelines on nutrition education and food policy at schools are proposed, based on the existent legal and normative situation.
