Legumes play a fundamental role in modern agriculture; their inclusion in the farming system allows a sustainable use of resources. This is due to the fact that legumes improve soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, thus reducing the need for chemical fertilizer. Likewise, they improve crop rotation, mainly in cereal crops, increasing the protein content of successive crops. In this article, we describe aspects of the current legume situation in Chile with statistical data relative to the trends of sowing area, yield, imports and internal demand. This article also presents the agronomical advantages of using legumes and the main problems associated with crop management that has deteriorated production in this country. Finally, we present possible solutions to reinvigorate production of this crop, which is important from both an environmental and nutrition perspective.
