OTAROLA U, Claudia et al. FRECUENCIA DE TRICOMONAS VAGINALIS DETECTADAS MEDIANTE PAPANICOLAOU EN CUATRO SERVICIOS DE SALUD, 1997-2002. Rev. chil. obstet. ginecol. [online]. 2005, vol.70, n.1, pp.3-7. ISSN 0717-7526.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-75262005000100002.

Trichomoniasis is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted disease in the world. Papanicolau (PAP) stain is not the test of choice for diagnosing the infection, however it is a common finding during gynecological examination of vaginal samples. A study to determine the report frequency of T. vaginalis in 504,638 PAP samples was conducted. The study included samples collected from 1997 to 2002 at the Health Services of Atacama province, North Metropolitan and West Metropolitan area, and Bio-Bio province. The results showed that the parasite was present in 20,270 samples (4.0%). It was observed that the frequency shows a numerical reduction from 4.96% to 3.31% during the 5 years in all Health Services. The most frequent age ranged from 30 to 39 years old in the sampled women. The usefulness of PAP as diagnostic method, the factors affecting the observed tendency, and differences between health services is discussed. It was concluded that a reduced frequency of T. vaginalis has been observed in all Health Services included in the study, and the technique of Papanicolaou allows to identify T. vaginalis and carry out prevalence studies and also to make treatment in the searched cases
