Abstract

Background: Women differ from men in their patterns of alcohol and drug abuse, requiring specialized facilities. However, little has been published on settings specifically designed for women. Objective: To share the experiences of an out patient clinic designed to assist women with problems of substance misuse. Method: The service and its users are described, and satisfaction with treatment given is evaluated with the Christo Inventory for Substance Misuse Services (CISS). Results: Thirty women were assessed according to the CISS showing improvement in various functional scores such as work relationships, job performance, and reduced consumption of drugs and alcohol. Most of the patients gave a positive appraisal of the unit activities, and their suggestions primarily were concerned with increasing and improving the therapy sessions. Conclusion: This experience sheds a favorable light on specialized services for treating female patients with alcohol and drug problems
