Resumen

FIGUEROA, Gustavo. A New Framework for Psychiatry: Mind Meets Brain. II. Historical Basis. Rev. chil. neuro-psiquiatr. [online]. 2002, vol.40, n.4, pp.321-334. ISSN 0717-9227.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-92272002000400004.

Background. Eric Kandel traced the specialty´s conceptual evolution in America from one predominant theoretical model to another over the course of the 20th century. Objective. To review these successive transitions that, by the middle of the 20th century, moved psychiatry from a field based on structural neuropathology to psychoanalysis. Method. To inquire into the realm in which "mind and brain" originate according to Kandel´s conceptual evolution. Results. The evolutionary advances in psychopharmacology, molecular biology, functional brain images, and genetics that have been occurring since the end of the 20th century raise the antipodal concern, i.e., that psychiatry could overcorrect with an increasingly narrow biological focus that would endanger the humanism of the field. Conclusions. A potential result of such biological reductionism would be the fragmentation of psychiatric care to a point that the psychiatrist would solely diagnose illnesses and prescribe medications, with a concomitant de-emphasis on the psychological and social aspects of causation and remediation of mental illnesses.

Palabras clave : mind and brain; history of psychiatry; biological reductionism.
