VALDIVIESO, Sergio  y  RAMIREZ, Cristina. Insight Dimensions in Psychoanalysis. Rev. chil. neuro-psiquiatr. [online]. 2002, vol.40, n.4, pp.371-380. ISSN 0717-9227.

A review of the psychoanalytical literature on the concept of insight and its different dimensions is presented. The concept of insight has been present in psychoanalysis since the beginning, being considered both as a catalyst and as the goal of treatment. Authors agree on the importance of the emotional experience for the acquisition of true insight. Several ego functions participate in the process of obtaining insight, among which are the self observation function, a capacity of controlled ego regression, and the suspension of active attention, which allow the emergence of fantasy. Together with a deeper knowledge of the unconscious, insight includes a reflective elaboration that allows the integration and synthesis of new contents in the ego. A better study and description of the concept of insight will allow the development of tools for its assessment and will give answer to important questions related to the "active" components relevant in the outcome of psychotherapy.

Palabras clave : psychoanalysis; insight; insight dimensions; self-observation; awareness.
