PINEDO, Javier. El pensamiento de los ensayistas y cientistas sociales en los largos años 60 en Chile (1958-1973): Los herederos de Francisco A. Encina. Atenea (Concepc.) [online]. 2005, n.492, pp.69-120. ISSN 0718-0462.

This article analyzes the work of a group of Chilean intellectuals of the 1960’s (Aníbal Pinto, Haracio Serrano, Hernán Díaz Arrieta, Ariel Peralta, Guillermo Feliú Cruz, Raúl Silva Castro, Luis Oyarzún, Hernán Godoy), all of whom center their thought around certain reiterative themes: to live in a society in crisis, the presence of poverty and underdevelopment and the need to overcome them, and the accelerated social and cultural changes that Chilean society was undergoing. To deal with these themes, these thinkers turn to the matrix of thought of Francisco A. Encina, who proposed a project for the country based on a nationalism inspired by Diego Portales and the conservative governments of the nineteenth century, in a greater participation of the State in the protection of national industries, in an image of Chile as a country that is superior and different in Latin America.  Furthermore, Encina proposed a negative vision of Chilean popular culture, and the necessity to realize educational reforms in the creation of entrepreneurial virtues that would contribute to remedy “racial” defects (inherited from Spanish militarism and Mapuche indolence) and the incapacity to face modernity.  Francisco A. Encina became a guide for many thinkers who adopted all or part of his project.  Another sector of intellectuals from the 1960’s, studied in the second part of this paper, opposed Encina’s model
