This work presents a methodology for the dynamic characterization of machine tools, as well as a control system that makes use of a piezoelectric actuator for vibration reduction during the process of machining. The methodology consists of the following four steps: identification of the dynamic characteristic of the system, implementation of a mathematical model, definition of the dynamic characteristics of the actuator and development and installation of the control algorithm. The proposed methodology has been applied in a vertical machining center and the vibration level during the machining of thin walls in an aluminum piece have been measured. It is concluded that the proposed methodology reduces considerably the vibration level present during the milling operation.
