Abstract

A computer program was developed to determine the flexure and shear resistance capacity of steel beams. The methodology was based on the Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) criteria of the American Institute of Steel Construction code (AISC). Easy to use working spreadsheets were developed using Mathcad. Two examples are solved for steel beams subjected to uniform and concentrated loads, comparing their flexural and shear resistance capacities under these loads. The program also fulfills structural design features allowing the user to obtain the most economic steel shape to solve a problem. The resultant application is of practical professional interest and also serves as additional teaching material in courses of steel design.
