This study presents a theoretical approach to modeling and simulation of industrial processes, using batch distillation as an example. The paper presents and discusses the concept of numerical experimentation as a methodology consisting of data collection from the actual process or from the literature, obtaining a mathematical model of the process, simulating the model through the resolution of the system of equations generated, optimizing the system based on  operational requirements and economic incentives, and finally analyzing the results. The scope of numerical experimentation is discussed and the methodology was applied to the analysis of a of batch distillation process, considering its relevance within the chemical industry.
