This paper describes a technique for the generation of structured grids on surfaces. The proposed procedure has two main properties: the parametric domain is independent of the surface definition and the boundaries of the computational domain can be chosen arbitrarily, without considering any limits to the definition of the geometry of the surface. These properties are obtained with the introduction of an extra coordinate transformation that relates the dependent variables of the grid generation process with the independent variables of the geometry definition. Examples of naval hydrodynamic problems with different geometrical descriptions are presented: an elliptical wing, a conventional marine propeller and a ship hull. The proposed method can also be used in conjunction with techniques for the generation of more sophisticated grids without alteration.
