A method for the study of the pantograph-catenary dynamic interaction in railways is presented. A non linear system of differential equations with constraints has been obtained, and the models for pantograph, catenary and constraints, are discussed. The equations have been solved as ordinary differential equations using the central differences method. This procedure has been used to develop high performance software in Visual C, to simulate the mechanical behavior of several pantographs interacting with the contact aerial line (catenary), in order to obtain optimal installation values both in conventional and high-speed lines.
