Abstract

An automatic control loop governed by a proportional integral and derivative controller (PID), was tuned. The loop is part of the iron production plant of Los Colorados mining company, located in the III Region of Chile. The function of the control loop is to regulate the level of the compensation hopper that feed the roller press of the mineral beneficiation plant. The adequate control of the hopper allows preventing undesirable interruptions of the production process mainly due to rollers getting out of line. The solution presented in this work to tune the control loop consists of three steps: i) modification of the control logic; ii) experimental determination of the control parameters; and iii) validation of the optimum parameters using the Box-Jenkins method. The observed stable behavior of the proposed control system demonstrates the validity of the results and allows that the modified loop operates efficiently in automatic mode.
