This study presents a method for establishing adequate tolerances for the manufacture and assembly of flange pairs joined by bolts. A precise solution was made, considering the linear and angular dimensional tolerances required for the location of the flange assembly holes, considering errors in fabrication as well as variations in the diameters of the bolts used for assembly. The study is based on the analysis of multidimensional tolerances, calculations of stack-up tolerance and total interchangeability. Also taken into account was the specific form of the assembly, for which a statistical method was applied which was verified by the Monte Carlo method. The procedure presented in this article represents a relatively simple method for obtaining good flange assemblies based on actual design cases and their fabrication shops.
