The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of inclusion of 2 wt% Cu in the sintering of a mixture of Zn-22 wt% Al powders. Briquettes of this mixture with and without 2 wt% Cu were prepared, and were then sintered from 15 to 75 minutes in an argon atmosphere at 357 °C. The progress of the sintering was inspected by structural analyses, tests of Rockwell F hardness and Vickers microhardness, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The 2 wt% Cu accelerated the sintering and produced an early consolidation by increasing the intensity of union between particles, as well as causing subsequent hardening between 30 and 45 minutes after sintering the sample. The diffraction map of the mixture with 2 wt% Cu, sintered for 45 minutes, was similar to that of Zn-22 wt% Al-2 wt% Cu alloy which had been cast, rolled and homogenized for 50 hours at 360 °C.
