FACCHIN, Gianella; ALVAREZ, Natalia; SAPIRO, Rossana  and  PERES-ARAUJO, Marcio. Development of Copper Complexes with Antitumor Activity: Synthesis and Characterization of a new Copper-Terpyridine Complex. Inf. tecnol. [online]. 2012, vol.23, n.6, pp.25-30. ISSN 0718-0764.

The aim of this research is the synthesis and characterization of new Copper(II)-2,2':6'2''-terpyridine complexes, as well as the evaluation of their antitumor activity, as a part of a project on copper complexes with cytotoxic activity. The new complex [Cu(terpy)(H2O)(SO4)]∙2H2O was characterized by infrared spectroscopy in solid state and aqueous solution, electronic spectra, conductimetry and cyclic voltammetry. Besides, its lipophilicity and antriproliferative activity in HeLa cells cultures were assessed. The results show that there is a copper atom in the complex that is coordinated to a terpyridine molecule and a sulphate anion. Aqueous solution behavior indicates that the sulphate anion is replaced by three water molecules being [Cu(terpy)(H2O)3]2+ the resulting ion. Lipophilicity studies show a partition coefficient between n-octanol and water of 1,3, similar to other compounds presenting biological activity. The antiproliferative activity was 25 % at 25 µM.

Keywords : terpyridine; cupper complexes; Cu(II); antitumor activity.
