TORRENEGRA, Miladys E; GRANADOS, Clemente; OSORIO, María R  e  LEON, Glicerio. Method Comparison of Microwave Radiation-assisted Hydro-distillation (MWHD) with Conventional Hydro-distillation (HD) in the Extraction of Essential Oil of Minthostachys mollis. Inf. tecnol. [online]. 2015, vol.26, n.1, pp.117-122. ISSN 0718-0764.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-07642015000100013.

Essential oil obtained from the leaves of the vegetal species Minthostachys mollis was extracted and characterized by hydro-distillation (HD) and radiation-assisted microwave hydro-distillation (RAMH). Relative density at 20°C, refractive index and solubility of the essential oils in ethanol (70% v/v) were determined. The chemical composition was determined using gas chromatography/ mass spectrometer. The essential oil presented values yields of 0.09 % (HD) and 0.92% (MWHD). The oil was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The main compounds found in the oil obtained by MWHD were thymol and carvacrol with relative rates of 73.36% and 10.94%, respectively, while in the oil obtained by HD were eudesmol acetate (22.44%) and isolongifolol acetate (21.75%). According to the results the MWHD is a fast, efficient and relatively economical technique compared to the conventional HD.
