Abstract This paper presents an overview of the main trends in Venezuelan political science. It describes the domestic evolution of the discipline and it also assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the Venezuelan political science scholarship. This article addresses both the theoretical evolution and the main methodological debates. It also shows the institutional development of both research and teaching, along with the main trends in the job market. We conclude that the process of institutionalization of the discipline is currently threatened by both economic and political crisis.
