Resumen

SAMAME B, María Olga. Transculturation, identity and otherness in novels dealing wilt arab inmigration in Chile. Rev. signos [online]. 2003, vol.36, n.53, pp.51-73. ISSN 0718-0934.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-09342003005300004.

Arab immigration into Chile is still going on due to political instability in the Middle East. Chilean writers of arab descend have recreated, from their particular perspectives, this displacementent. This article has a double objetive: first, to suggest an approach to the problem of identitity and otherness in Arab immigration narrative; and secondly, to establish how the loss a part of ancestral identity traits has been produced. It is proposed that, in these novels, a problem of identity and otherness is manifested during the process of adaptation, insertion and integration of arabs in Chilean society, whose identity is in a constant state of construction and reconstruction. To elucidate this problem, five novels are analyzed, applying Todorov methodologieil concepts. The analysis shows that arab immigration experienced discrimination and alienation, concluding in a full integration that has contributed to the development of the country.

Palabras clave : identity; alterability; integration.
