To evaluate the blue crab population state in the Chetumal Bay, independent and dependent samplings of the fishery were carried out, considering climatic seasons: cold-front, dry and rainy. A total of 2177 blue crabs were collected, 1146 coming from the fishery and 1031 from independent sampling. The size-frequency data showed two age groups, (60 to 119 mm and 120 to 179 mm carapace width). Higher crabs abundance occurred during the rainy season. Using only male dependent and independent data, the parameters of von Bertalanffyφs model were obtained: K = 0.51 (year-1); L= 231.50 mm CW and t0 = -0.11. Total mortality, Z, was 0.85, whereas natural mortality, M, was 0.66, and fishing mortality, F, was 0.19. Based on the relation between the yield-per-recruit (Y´/R) and the average rate exploitation E was 0.22. We conclude that the resource is not over-fished and can sustain the current level of exploitation Emax = 0.65.
