Resumen

DI PRADO, Violeta S. FROM THE INTERIOR TO THE SURFACE: PASTE AND DECORATION ANALYSIS CONDUCTED ON POTTERY FROM LOMA DE LOS MUERTOS SITE (NORTHEASTERN PATAGONIA). Magallania [online]. 2013, vol.41, n.2, pp.197-214. ISSN 0718-2244.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-22442013000200011.

This paper presents compositional and textural characteristics of ceramic pastes, on the basis of thin section petrography, and systematic decoration analysis, by identifying design elements and combination patterns, of the pottery recovered in Loma de los Muertos site (Department of General Conesa, Río Negro Province). Pottery was recovered in surface position within an archaeological context interpreted as a residential camp in which multiple activities took place during, at least, two occupation events ca. 2.000 and 500 years BP. Based on the obtained information, the technological choices taken by the potters during the initial and intermediate stages of the chaîne opératoire are inferred and possible factors that conditioned them, both environmental and cultural, are discussed. Knowledge of the non-plastic inclusions composition of the pastes, along with geological, archaeological and transcultural evidence, allowed to propose a local provisioning and production of pottery. It also allowed to infer that different choices were taken during the initial stages of the chaîne opératoire, whether at the source selection, or during the clayey raw material preparation. Finally, some decorative representations and techniques of Loma de los Muertos pottery are similar to other pottery records recovered from North-eastern Patagonia and Eastern and South-central Humid Pampas, and were interpreted as within the frame of a vast interaction network, in which ways of doing and representing, as well as objects and people, were exchanged during Late Holocene.
