Abstract

URBINA C., MARÍA XIMENA. JOHN NARBOROUGH EXPEDITION TO CHILE, 1670: DEFENSE OF VALDIVIA, INDIAN RUMORS, INFORMATION ON PRISIONERS, AND THE BELIEF IN THE CITY OF THE CÉSARES. Magallania [online]. 2017, vol.45, n.2, pp.11-36. ISSN 0718-2244.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-22442017000200011.

This article studies non researched aspects related to the expedition sent by the english crown to the chilean coasts between 1669 and 1671, under the command of John Narborough. The study emphasizes aspects related to information and people circulation (flow). We analyze the relation of this expedition with the rumours and news given by the local inland aborigins, their handling of the information and how this affected the decision making process of the Viceroyalty; the projection of the belief in the “City of the Caesars” even up into Charles the II English Court; the fortunes of the english prisoners captured in Valdivia and executed in Lima eleven years later; and the information they provided and the situation of (in) communication between the fortifications that protected the stronghold of Valdivia, that gives us an internal view of the tactics and procedures of its defensive system. The sources coming predominantly from the Archivo General de Indias (Seville): fondo Gobierno, Audiencia de Lima.

Keywords : John Narborough; Indian rumors; City of the Cesares; flow of information.
