VAN CAUWELAERT R, ROBERTO et al. Partial nephrectomy: An alternative for the treatment of renal tumors. Rev Chil Cir [online]. 2006, vol.58, n.3, pp.199-202. ISSN 0718-4026.

Background: Imaging studies are fundamental for the detection of renal tumors, many of them of less than 4 cm, in which a partial resection allows an effective treatment. In our service we offer a partial nephrectomy to patients with only one kidney, patients with bilateral tumors or with renal failure and to all subjects with tumors of 4 cm or less. Aim: To report our experience with partial nephrectomy. Material and methods: Prospective register of all partial nephrectomies performed between August 1995 and August 2003. Results: In the study period, 37 patients aged 31 to 83 years, were operated. Mean tumor size was 4.7 cm. Mean hospital stay was 3.9 days. The only early complication was a persistent hematuria that required a new surgical exploration. The only late complication was the progression of a renal failure, that was already present before the surgery. During a mean follow up was 43 months, no patient has shown tumor recurrence. Conclusions: Partial nephrectomy is safe, has the same rate of complications than a radical nephrectomy, with similar oncological success
