Background: The simultaneous presence of two carcinomas in an individual is uncommon. Particularly, the prevalence of renal cell cancer is 0.3 to 0.5% in patients with colorectal cancer. Aim: To study the frequency of simultaneous presentation of renal cell and colorectal cancer. Material and methods: Retrospective review of medical records of patients with colorectal cancer attended in a clinical hospital between 1990 and 2006. Patients with a simultaneous presentation of renal cell cancer were included in this study. Results: Three hundred and three patients had renal cell cancer and 623 had colorectal cancer. Six patients (1 woman), had both types of cancer simultaneously, with a prevalence of 0.86%. In five patients, both tumors were excised simultaneously. Conclusions: The association of colorectal and renal cell cancer in this series of patients was uncommon. When it occurs the excision of both tumors is feasible
