This article presents and defines research on comprehension of disciplinary text written in English as an emerging research field. To do this, we present a scientific-historical view, from which we distinguish concepts considered critical to set the limits of this type of research, such as, comprehension and reading. We also describe English for Academic Purposes (EAP) as an approach that considers English teaching as a means for disciplinary access. Thus, we propose research on comprehension of disciplinary texts as an independent field that splits from other very similar ones, but with different emphasis. From this perspective, this article seeks to become a contribution to the work of teachers and specialists interested in providing university students with pedagogical tools to help them get high quality education processes. This, from an approach where disciplinary texts comprehension, as a discursive skill, is considered essential for academic and professional development
