The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of a virtual laboratory of general chemistry for the teching-learning of concepts related to atomic-molecular quantities and for identifying the concept of mol. The type of design was experimental with pretest and post-test. The study was done by dividing all the freshmen 2014 into two groups: a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG). Ninety percent of the students in the EG answered correctly the item atomic-molecular quantities in the first partial examination. Of the ones in the CG only 45% did. Students from the EG developed cognitive skills during interaction with the simulator, using it as a learning strategy and obtained a value of 0.89 for the Hake factor, a satisfactory value with a high gain of learning. Also, the students showed a positive attitude towards the concepts discussed and how to work with them in class.
