Social sciences characterized for managing the tension between scientific pretensions and the intellectual criticism dimension, searching for a certain image-diagnosis of society that would allowits transformation. These three great vocations: scientific, critical and professional, were inextricably linked. In this article, the current dissociation of these dimensions is examined, and three challenges: transdisciplinarity, the horizon of the limit concept and the convergence of the diverse voices of the social sciences in Latin America are discussed.
